equality now & reproductive rights.
Equality Now is an international human rights organization that "works for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world."
Since 1992, our organization has worked to "[document] violence and discrimination against women and [mobilize] international action to support efforts to stop these abuses."
Reproductive rights for women have become a more salient issue in recent decades, especially in developing countries around the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, women face many obstacles in their struggle to access contraceptives, legal and safe abortions, and family planning services. In many places, governments hinder these rights for women, however, cultural and religious norms also deeply affect the level of reproductive freedom women experience.
It is important to address the issue of reproductive rights in sub-Saharan Africa for the for the sake of both women's health and the nation's health. According to the African Union, women face a 1 in 16 chance of dying while giving birth. High rates of illegal abortions in sub-Saharan Africa coupled with limited access to contraceptives threaten women's reproductive freedoms. In addition, countries in Africa will face more drastic rates of poverty in the future if effective population growth policies are not put into place.
